Vector Auxiliary Files Background

When you display a vector layer for the first time, ENVI creates several auxiliary files. These files help speed up the display of the layers in future sessions.

ENVI writes auxiliary files to the same directory as the input vector files; however, when that directory has read-only permissions, ENVI writes the auxiliary files to the directory specified by the Auxiliary File Directory preference.

Shapefiles

ENVI creates the following auxiliary files when displaying a shapefile for the first time. The rootname is the same name as the input vector file.

  • rootname.eq1
  • rootname.ed1
  • rootname.ebb
  • rootname.shp.qtr

Geodatabase Feature Classes

ENVI creates the following auxiliary files in the system's temporary directory (specified in the Temporary Directory preference) when displaying geodatabase feature classes with 1 million or less vertices:

  • rootname.gdb.qtr
  • rootname.gdb.tsl

If the number of vertices is greater than 1 million, ENVI makes a copy of the feature class as a new shapefile (rootname.gdb.shp) and creates the following auxiliary files:

  • rootname.gdb.shp.qtr
  • rootname.gdb.shp.tsl

ENVI Vector File (EVF) Format

ENVI creates the following auxiliary files when displaying vector files in EVF format for the first time:

  • rootname.evf.tsl
  • rootname.evf.qtr
