Filter Points by Height

Filter Points by Height

The Filter by Height tool allows you to set minimum and maximum values to filter the points visible in the Main window. With Filter by Height, you can:

  • Filter out trees or look through tree canopies
  • Examine points under the terrain to filter out noise using negative input values
  • Examine different parts of trees at varying heights
  • Filter out points relative to the terrain
  • Experiment with different height settings

Filter by Height is applied differently to the point cloud layers for QA Mode. When you filter points in QA Mode, the settings are relative to the terrain, with a range of 0 to 50 meters. When you filter points in the standard view, the settings are based on the minimum and maximum height, in meters, for the points in the project.

To filter points by height:

  1. Click the Filter by Height button on the toolbar to open one the following dialogs: Filter Points by Height (when accessed from the standard view), or Filter Points by Height Relative to Terrain (when accessed from the QA Mode view).
  2. Click the Filter Points check box to enable the filter controls.
  3. Use the slider bars to adjust the settings, or enter a specific value in the fields provided. Negative values are allowed when the data contains points that are below sea level. The filter results display in the Main window as you adjust the settings, and the dialog remains open for you to continue adjusting the settings to achieve the desired.
  4. Click OK to close the dialog and keep the filter settings.

Tip: If you see points in the standard view but not in QA Mode view, check the Filter by Height settings. Verify that the settings are not filtering out all QA points in the current extent (defined by the magenta rectangle in the Navigate window).
