How do I access ENVI and IDL downloads?

To access the Exelis VIS download pages, you will first need to login to your account, or register for an account if you do not already have one. Please note that if you do have an account but are not sure of the login information, that can be requested from our login page:

To access the download page, first select "My Account" in the upper right hand corner of the main Exelis VIS website:

This will prompt you to login. If you are already logged in to the website, proceed to the next step:

You will then select "Downloads" from the options available under "My Account":

What are the differences between the Native and UNIX installers for Macintosh?

Exelis VIS provides two separate installers for the Macintosh based on user preference. Ultimately, the UNIX installer and the Native installer end up installing the same software package, with the difference being how the installer is run. The Native installer uses the Macintosh native environment to provide a more GUI based installation, while the UNIX installer uses the X11 Terminal environment for installation. We typically recommend the native installer for ease of use however it is up to your preference. Please note there is also a set of installation instructions available next to the download that will guide you through using either method.

Where can I get and install the ENVI modules (FX, DEM Ex, ACM, NITF, LiDAR, Ortho)?

The ENVI/IDL installer includes the ENVI modules and are installed by default with the exception of the Rigorous Orthorectification module, which remains a separate installation.  Each module is unlocked for use through the license features in the license file.  Starting with ENVI 5.3, the LiDAR installer was merged into the ENVI application so that it is no longer a separate install option.

Why can't I deselect IDL during installation?

IDL is required for all installations, even if you are not licensed for it. This is because ENVI is a program built in IDL, so it requires certain libraries and dependencies to be installed as well for it to function properly. If you are not licensed for IDL, this will also provide you with access to the development version of IDL in demo mode as well as the IDL Virtual Machine in the event you are not familiar with IDL and might be interested in seeing how IDL might improve your workflow.

Hotfix vs. Patch vs. Service Pack

Starting in ENVI 5.1 and IDL 8.3, our main products no longer use the term patch, instead using the terms hotfix and service pack. Please note that other products not included in our main install base will continue to use the patch terminology, however that will be interchangeable with hotfix.

An ENVI or IDL hotfix will typically include bugfixes or minor functionality updates, and can be installed on top of an existing installation. You will find in any hotfix available on our website for download that the corresponding version is listed in the title, signifying which version of ENVI or IDL it is meant for. Please see below for more information on the date listed next to the hotfix. You will also find release notes that include all of the changes and fixes that are included in the corresponding hotfix.

An ENVI or IDL Service Pack will typically include all previous hotfixes, as well as functionality upgrades and are full installs. While hotfixes will be applied on top of an existing installation, a service pack will detect previous installations and perform an uninstallation/reinstallation of the new software package (on the Windows platform) or overwrite the existing installation (on UNIX based operating systems).

What are the dates next to the hotfix?

The date next to the hotfix is the date that it was released for download. Exelis VIS has begun rolling all previous hotfixes into the latest one available, and the date is used to designate whether a user has already installed the latest hotfix or not. You can also see the version of the hotfix by using the "Release Notes" item if needed.

Where can I find more details on Exelis Platform Support?

More information regarding our platform support can be found in Help Article 4627

Where can I get old versions of Exelis Products?

If you have a license for a previous version of ENVI or IDL, you can select the "My Downloads" tab for previous versions.

Please note that we suggest keeping a copy of previous versions on hand as we cannot guarantee that they will always be available depending on their release date.

Do I need to download the license server as well as ENVI/IDL/LiDAR?

It is not required to download the license server separately if you plan on installing ENVI or IDL on that machine, as all of the required license manager binaries are included in the full installation. The downloads marked as "Exelis VIS Product license server" are designed for server systems that will be used solely for distributing licenses.

This is an optional download for ENVI.  Instructions on how to use this dataset with ENVI can be found in Help Article 14399.
