Utilities need to manage assets while simultaneously keeping costs under control, but visual inspections are time consuming, expensive and not always accurate. Using a combination of advanced ENVI analytics, machine learning technologies, and remotely sensed data from UAV or aerial sources, you can evaluate asset condition and direct crews to make repairs before an outage occurs.

Knowing the location and configuration of your assets network-wide is imperative to being able to maintain them, as well being prepared to respond during outages. Do you know if your infrastructure is at risk from a weather event or other natural or manmade disasters? We can create accurate DEMs from Geiger-mode LiDAR or stereo imagery that can be used to model how flooding will affect your assets.


Your primary responsibility is to provide energy to your customers, especially during adverse weather conditions. To do this it’s important to know the condition of your network before the storm hits and have the data and tools you'll need to quickly make a response plan in its aftermath.

Pre-Storm Planning

Accurate Baseline Map
A baseline map of your network lets you prepare for a wide range of events that could affect your ability to deliver power to your customers. Use our Geiger-mode LiDAR and analytical capabilities to build accurate base maps that will help you answer questions such as:

  • Did the recent storm greatly impact my network?
  • What remediation steps can I take to harden my network for future events?
  • What is the flooding potential for my asset locations?
  • What is the condition of my current assets?

Stage Crew and Equipment

To place crews and equipment in the right place, you need to understand which parts of the network are at the highest risk for the specific storm that is coming.

Do you expect flooding? Identify high-risk locations with a DEM. Is the concern high winds, snow, or ice? Use our ENVI and machine learning analytics to identify pole tilt, line sway, and others factors that would place these assets at higher risk. With this information in hand ahead of time, determining where to place crews and equipment is based on science, not chance.

Post Storm Assessment

Data Collection Management
Immediately after a storm clears, gather information about the condition of your network by outfitting your airborne patrol assets with our modular LiDAR and imagery sensor. Our Jagwire solution is the perfect complement to ingest this data, as well as data from a UAV platform, into a system that allows for analysis and dissemination in near real time. You can count on Jagwire to perform in the most challenging situations because it’s been operationally proven in support of DoD missions.

Analytics for Targeted Response
With data about network assets and surrounding areas available in near real time, you’ll compress the timeline from outage to repair. ENVI analytics for change detection, feature extraction and terrain analysis can precisely locate damaged assets and identify high-risk locations. Couple ENVI analytics with our Geospatial Services Framework (GSF) and it’s possible to automatically create work orders that safely direct crews to priority locations.

Vegetation Management

Get actionable information to identify risks to your entire network and efficiently direct vegetation operations over broad and sometimes inaccessible areas. With over a decade of experience providing data analytics to the transmission side of the business to mitigate potential disruptions, our Geiger-mode LiDAR technology can now also provide efficiencies across your distribution network. Our automated processing capabilities produce actionable information across an entire network, including the ability to comply with regulations and standards such as NERC FAC-003.

Create Vegetation Profiles

Vegetation profiles can be derived from high-resolution Geiger-mode LiDAR data and by analyzing multi/hyperspectral data with ENVI. Accurate species identification lets you predict future growth rates and patterns and preemptively mitigate problem vegetation and invasive species.

Efficiently Deploy Crews

ENVI can extract features such as trees, power lines, and power poles from a variety of remotely sensed data including LiDAR and spectral imagery. These features can be seamlessly pushed to your GIS as vector objects to map vegetation so you can deploy the appropriate crews and equipment to specific problem areas and reduce the time visually inspecting corridors.


Early in the corridor planning process it’s important to accurately evaluate the terrain, taking into consideration impacts to the environment, private land owners, and regulations. Harris Geospatial Solutions offers data and analytics to help efficiently select the proper routes, control costs, and reduce risk to the business.

Terrain Mapping

We can provide the tools and data to create highly accurate DEMs that help you choose the best transmission route for your network expansion. DEMs can be provided using our own Geiger-mode LiDAR data which is collected at higher point densities (>80 points/ppsm) than traditional linear LiDAR. Additionally DEMs can be created using ENVI analytics on data from UAV platforms or from stereo satellite imagery.
